About Us

Phoenix Outdoor is a wilderness therapy program located near beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. We provide clinical assessments, wilderness therapy, and traditional therapeutic interventions for troubled teens ages 13-17 Phoenix Outdoor WIlderness Programs for Teenswho are struggling with substance use and/or abuse, as well co-occurring behavioral and mental health issues. In an outdoor setting, far removed from daily distractions, we help you create a plan and process for long-term success and get your teenager to buy into that process, making needed behavioral changes.

These changes come about, in part, because of our unique expedition model. For 10 days, teens hike, camp, and participate in meaningful and intentional activities in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains under the expert guidance of trained field instructors. Then, each small peer group spends four days at base camp participating in therapeutic activities and meetings and practicing their new skills. At base, the teens also have the opportunity to shower and wash clothes.

Our wilderness therapy program for teens not only changes the lives of our students, but also their families. The highly trained professionals at Phoenix Outdoor work extensively with parents and loved ones prior to enrollment and even after graduation.

Who We Are

Phoenix Outdoor is a licensed wilderness therapy program that serves adolescents ages 13-17 with its location just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. We offer crisis intervention, provide a thorough assessment of underlying issues driving negative behaviors, assess the scope and severity of substance abuse and dependency, and achieve significant behavioral changes in the adolescent. We view the adolescent as part of the family system and support the entire family throughout the process.

Our Mission

In our years of experience working with teens who are struggling with substance abuse, we have noticed a pattern: young men and women becoming increasingly isolated from friends and family, associating with a different crowd, and eventually experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Drug and alcohol use frequently leads to more dangerous behaviors and before parents realize it, their son or daughter has reached a crisis point.

Although individual therapy and traditional substance abuse programs fill an important need, we have found that these programs often fail to meet the unique needs of the adolescent who is falling deeper into self-destructive patterns. Wilderness therapy, by contrast, has proven highly effective in helping teens realize the extent of their substance abuse problem and committing to the process of change.

Because Phoenix Outdoor specializes in treating adolescents with significant substance abuse and chemical dependency issues, we are able to provide teens with the structure and support they need to accept responsibility for their behavior. Using a 12-Step based program that combines addictions counseling, education, and a wilderness therapy field curriculum, our addiction experts have helped hundreds of teens develop a strategy to stay substance-free.

Our Credentials

Phoenix Outdoor is licensed by the State of North Carolina, Department of Health and Human Services as a therapeutic, habilitative camp. Phoenix Outdoor belongs to the Outdoor Behavioral Industry Council. The company is owned by the Aspen Education Group, a nationwide network of outdoor and residential programs for adolescents and young adults.
