Earn College Credits
Many of our students here were already enrolled in college or just about on their way. Certain choices they have made have taken them off that track and brought them to us. To help prepare them for better success when they return home, they are able to enroll in some college courses while here with us. This is an additional cost, not covered by our tuition fees. There a few different Outreach College programs offered here locally. This is a great opportunity for those who do not want to fall behind in their educational goals while working on their personal issues. There are several courses and schedules to choose from. Please ask us for more information if interested.
Independent Life Skills
Learning to be independent and successful is complicated enough with out having to deal with issues that are more serious. At Bonneville Canyon, we realize that most of our students are missing a lot of essential skills that lead to good decision making. We focus on this subject by teaching them basic life skills. This builds a strong base and adds confidence so they can make changes in their lives. While working on their issues, we instill routine and teamwork. Living in a house with others involves planning and cooperation. The students are responsible for maintaining all aspects of the home. Menu planning, grocery shopping, cleaning maintenance, and cooking all the meals. Budget planning is also learned. The students are given a monthly budget in which they need to compensate for, rent, groceries, utilities, and activity expenses. They need to maintain this and ensure that all expenses are paid and still have money left over for a savings plan. In additional to the financial planning that is done, the students learn to respect and adjust to other peoples needs and requests. Interacting with the other roommates and achieving a healthy workable environment takes teamwork, patience, and understanding. After learning these skills one will become stronger and more mature, enabling him a better chance to success in life.
Outdoor Activities
Depending upon the season, we have several types of activities. All of our activities are treated as rewards. Not everyone gets to participate in all that we do. They must show progress and be getting along with the others.
In the winter, we enjoy down hill skiing, snow-boarding and cross-country skiing. We also have snow shoe trips right out our back door.
Spring, summer and fall the choices are endless. Regular fly-fishing and hiking occurs weekly. We also plan some overnight trips that involve canoeing, camping and backpacking. Rock climbing is a major activity that we enjoy every chance we get. This activity really teaches the students trust, teamwork and self-confidence. We have local access to offer this activity often, but also plan larger more dramatic trips in the wilderness. All activities are well earned and very much remembered.
